February 12, , THEN cut the lines with a hacksaw and use rubber hose and clamps. I’d be lying if I said I’d never used rubber hose for the trans cooler before in a pinch. The “crazy” thing I found goes far beyond that I swear it’s a new one on me The AC condenser now serves as the tranny cooler! I couldn’t beleive what I was seeing at first They took the tranny lines, roughly bent them all around, cut the fttings off the AC condenser and tranny lines and then hooked them up with fuel hose and clamps. Wierder still if that’s possible is that on the radiator, the connections for the cooler are plugged with the correct type of “flare plugs”. It’s like they put in a new radiator or something but then wnet to “extra” effort to goof up the cooler lines and AC condenser which appaarently wasn’t leaking because it holds tranny fluid!

As you can see in the photos, Art Carr modifies the tailshaft housing to accept a mechanical speedometer drive late-model vehicles in which the 4L80E is used require an electronic speedo and use either a stock diesel truck transmission computer with a custom chip and wiring harness to operate the trans, or sophisticated Motec Systems computer controls.
The Turbo Shop has an outfit that comes with a custom cast-aluminum tailshaft housing with a mechanical speedo drive and the option of several different trans mounts for various applications. The Turbo Shop also uses the simple and relatively inexpensive GM diesel computer and a custom wiring harness to operate the trans.
As you can also see, the 4L80E is big and heavy, but it will still fit in most GM musclecars. The only drawback is price. But that includes a rebuilt trans with beefed-up internals, a computer, a wiring harness, a custom chip, the TPS and everything else necessary for your application.

Jun 24, · Hey guys, I just bought a new tranny cooler for my TA. My regular radiator has the inserts for the tranny lines. When I go to hookup my new cooler should I just hookup the new cooler and bypass the regular radiator?

The transmission rarely gets much more than a single thought: For the purpose of this story, we are going to throw out the whole stick-shift thing; this story is all about high-performance overdrive automatics. Modern automatic transmissions go far beyond the old slushbox technology inside the typical TH or C4 you find in most hot rods.
Transmission coolers are typically square-shaped and thin, so they can easily attach in between other components. Most kits offer adhesive mounting pads that allow you stick the cooler right onto the radiator, but there are also usually extra mounting rods that you can insert between the radiator and the cooler’s mounting flanges.
The TV cable on the R4 and R transmissions controls line pressure, shift points, shift feel, part throttle downshifts, and detent full throttle downshifts. So if the TV cable is not adjusted properly, it can cause numerous transmission problems. The TV cable is connected to and operates the throttle lever, and bracket assembly mounted on the valve body. The function of the throttle lever and bracket assembly I to transfer the movements of the throttle plate in the carburetor to the TV plunger in the valve body.
This causes TV pressure and line pressure to increase according to throttle opening and also controls modulated and detent downshifts. The proper adjustment of the TV cable is based on the TV plunger being fully depressed with the engine at wide-open throttle see figure 9. When the TV cable is properly adjusted the movement of the TV plunger in the valve body is calibrated to the movement of the fuel delivery system.

Pondering it, I could go with the standard VW cooler. Which in my opinion is not really a cooler but a engine oil stabilizer as the operating temp of the radiator is used to maintain the oil at the water temperature and not cooling it. They used the standard screw claps and not the spring clamps. Spring Clamps are the only way to go for certain applications. Or look for installing a true honest to goodness oil cooler that cools the oil in relation to the air flow over its own radiator.

About an hour later, I was on my way. Approximently 1 mile later my car would not go above 40 mph when I was trying to get on the freeway and I could smell smoke. I got off at the first possible exit and found a safe place to pull over I drove a total of miles total. I called jiffy lube and they sent a mechanic and manager to look at my car and determined there was no transmission fluid. I had not asked them to touch my transmission fluid and the sheet they send you home with indicated my transmission fluid was full.
They went to go buy transmission fluid to fill it, but after speaking to my husband we decided to get it towed to a mechanic to check it out to make sure no damage was caused by driving without transmission fluid. The next day we went back to jiffy lube to complete an incident report and they said they completed an investigation and they accidently emptied the transmission fluid thinking it was the oil and then added more oil.
They are currently paying for a rental car and the dealership is running diagnostics to determine what is wrong with the car. Jiffy lube agreed to pay 2k to fix damage to the engine, but the problem we are having now is concerning the transmission. There were some metal shavings in the fluid that remained in the transmission, the hole where the dipstick goes was smoking, and the transmission did slip once while going from 2nd during a test drive. The dealership says they can’t definitively say there is damage to the transmission without opening it up and examining it, which is as expensive as rebuilding it.
However, they do say that they would normally recommend I replace the transmission with these symptoms. Jiffy lube is saying we should wait to see if the transmission goes out, and if it does they will investigate it and if they determine it was a lack of fluid that caused the damage they will replace it.

Thanked 1 Time in 1 Post Project almost finished! Got the new radiator in on Saturday! I needed a sacket wrench that was fairly thin to be able to undo the bolts that hold it in. My socket was about 2 inches long with the adaptor for a smallish bolt, so the wrench handle was up against the bumper.

This is from a Chilton’s manual: The vacuum control modulator is accessible from under the vehicle on the driver’s side. Disconnect the Negative battery cable. Raise the v…ehicle and support it safely on jackstands. From underneath the vehicle, remove the vacuum hose attached to the vacuum assembly. Inspect the hose for cracks or tears and replace if needed. Remove the vacuum diaphragm retainer bolt and clamp securing the assembly to the side of the transmission.
Do not bend or pry the clamp during removal. Remove the vacuum control modulator and rod from the transmission body.

I am attributing that to my errors with the tape measure in my haste to get mine measured so I could get back into a warm house, and I am simply using the published specs. First up, let’s tackle overall length and case length. Overall length is important for the final driveshaft length and the case length is important for the fitment to the transmission tunnel. This will require shortening the driveshaft by a matching amount, so I know that no matter what I will be paying a visit to the local driveshaft shop, which I would be doing anyway – see the section on Inputs and Output for details on why.
That means the transmission should fit nicely without any major clearance issues. This is all good news and there are no major problems to solve here. Depending on the specific original and donor transmissions, the full length transmission is anywhere from a tad shorter to tad longer, making that part more a less a wash and a change in driveshaft length all but certain.
That leaves the location of the transmission mount pad relative to the bellhousing. This distance is important because of the transmission crossmember that holds up the back of the transmission. Here are some pictures illustrating this. The next five pictures are of the used TH R4 transmission I purchased to use in my swap with the special extension housing explained in the next section – they should give you some idea of the overall size and shape of the transmission.
The final four pictures have excellent views of the mounting pad on the case as well as the mounting pad on the special extension housing that I will be using.
